Polygamy in Islam is an improvement over an Ancient Arabian Custom

Muslim apologists contend that Islam permits polygamy because in pre-Islamic Arabia the number of wives that a man could acquire was unrestricted. Therefore, Islam adopted and improved upon a preexisting practice by not allowing a man to marry more than four wives concurrently, and only if he could afford to support them all equally:"

Polygamy was practiced [in pre-Islamic Arabia] on an unlimited scale before the advent of Islam. Consequently, Islam did not abolish this deep-rooted practice instantaneously to avoid a major social upheaval. In any case, polygamy is not peculiar to Islam.12
